About Rodrigo Fischer

Rodrigo Fischer.2Rodrigo Fischer is a Brazilian artist who has worked in the theater for over 18 years as a performer, theater director, professor and light designer. He has been working across the boundaries of performance, theatre, video and installation. His work has been shown in Argentina, Belarus, Brazil, Chile, Estonia, France, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Spain and USA.

For the past sixteen years, he has directed Grupo Desvio to develop performances, techniques and theatre experimentation with emphasis on the actor craft, resulting theatre works like Pequena Existência (2002), Beckett às avessas (2004), Eutro (2008), Misanthrofreak (2014), which was developed during his artistic residence in two important spaces in New York. Misanthrofreak has won the most important prize in Brasilia, which was considered the best performance in 2014. With Grupo Desvio he has created a new performance called The Losers (2015). He also has been working with International Theaters, where he is invited to direct local actors, like he did with the Georgian group Akhmeteli Theater, which resulted the performance 2+2=2.

Actor since 1995, he has worked with important names of Brazilian theater including Antônio Abujamra, Hugo Rodas, and Domingos de Oliveira. In the world of cinema, he has protagonized at three Alumbramento’s productions: the feature At the wrong place (2012), the short film Love never ends (2013) and the feature The last breath (2016).

With a Bachelor and Masters in theater from Universidade de Brasilia, in his Ph.d, made at Universidade de Brasília and City University of New York, he analyzed the works of John Cassavetes and the relation between the theatrical and cinematographic spaces focusing on acting. In his first  post-doctoral at Universidade de Brasília, the research was based on a reflection to amplify the appropriation of new technologies on stage. Currently, he is doing a postdoctoral research at NYU’s Performance Studies Department, supervised by Andre Lepecki, to think the agency among objects, bodies, sounds and images to create a time-based media. He is also doing some artistic residencies in USA to develop the next interdisciplinary project called The other shadow’s.

He has participated in several Theater International Congress and published in national and international papers.His last congress in March 2015 was held in Nouvelle Sorbonne at Paris, where he was invited by the researcher Josette Féral to show the performance Misanthrofreak and also to give a speech.
